Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall will make visit to Salem

SALEM — For the past several months, Selectmen Chairman Pat Hargreaves has been updating the board on the American Legion Post 63’s efforts to bring an 80-percent scale-sized replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall to Salem.

Those efforts are now a reality, as Hargreaves said a contract has been signed with Texas-based American Veterans Traveling Tribute to bring the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall and the group’s Cost of Freedom Tribute to the grounds of Salem High School from Oct. 15-19.

The wall and its exhibits will be open 24 hours a day during the time they will be in Salem. There will also be a number of special events and ceremonies over the five-day period, according to Hargreaves.

“There will be a welcoming escort of the wall into Salem on Oct. 15,” said Hargreaves. “The opening ceremony is on Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. Oct. 17 is law enforcement and firefighter recognition day, Oct. 18 is the veterans celebration, and Oct. 19 is the Veterans Day observation.”

The Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall is the largest traveling replica of the wall, an 80 percent replica with all of the names that are on the memorial wall in Washington, D.C.

While the traveling wall is the centerpiece of the Cost of Freedom tribute, there are also exhibits honoring the sacrifices of those who served the country from the Revolutionary War through the present day.

Hargreaves said the American Legion is looking for donations to help defray the cost of bringing the wall and the exhibits to Salem. The overall cost is about $16,000.

Anyone wishing to make donations can make out checks to American Legion Post 63, PO Box 625, Salem NH, 03079.
