Woman dies in Route 4 crash in Canaan

CANAAN — One woman was killed Tuesday when the trailer of a tractor-trailer swerved into her car on Route 4, Police Chief Samuel Frank said.

Frank said the truck was heading west on Route 4 shortly before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when the trailer of his truck “skipped out to the left” and directly into the path of a car heading east.

The woman’s car was thrown off the road and into nearby woods by the impact, he said.

The woman, the lone occupant in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity was being withheld Tuesday night while officers continued to notify her family, Frank said.

The truck driver was not injured, he said.

Frank said the cause of the crash, which happened during “pouring rain,” remains under investigation.

He said alcohol does not preliminarily appear to be a factor, but that authorities are investigating whether speed was a factor in the crash.
