Feds cede building to Portsmouth

May 29. 2014 8:51PM

PORTSMOUTH — The federal government will vacate the McIntyre Building and transfer its ownership to the city, according to statements from U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte.

Shaheen, D-N.H., said the General Services Administration, which had previously said it would not move out of the downtown building, delivered its reversed decision to her office Thursday morning.

“This is great news for the City of Portsmouth,” Shaheen said. “I am looking forward to continue working with the GSA in whatever way possible to help the City of Portsmouth obtain the McIntyre Building once federal agencies have relocated so we can start developing the jobs and economic revenue from this long-awaited transition.”

“Portsmouth has long sought the transfer of the McIntyre Building, and GSA’s announcement takes an important step toward achieving that goal,” Ayotte, R-N.H., said in a statement. “I’ve been pleased to work with local officials as the delegation has made the case for Portsmouth at the federal level, and I will continue to work with the city to advance this local economic priority.”
