Divisional meets highlight weekend schedule

Team titles, individual honors and berths in the state Meet of Champions will be on the line this weekend when the NHIAA outdoor track and field division championships take place at three locations.

The Division I meet is today at Winnacunnet High School of Hampton, beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Defending champions are the Nashua High North boys’ team and the Bedford High girls’ squad. Athletes to watch include Emma Chechovich of Winnacunnet (seeded first in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, and second in the triple jump), Shannon Murdock of Exeter (No. 1 in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters), Kayla Watson of Derry’s Pinkerton Academy (No. 1 in the shot put and discus), Nashua North’s Zakari Jenkins (top seed in the 100 meters and tied with Pinkerton’s Zach Cicio for No. 1 in the 200), Manchester Memorial’s Brett Hoerner (No. 1 in the 800 and 1,600 meters) and Londonderry’s Starlin Ortiz (top-ranked in the high jump and long jump).

The Division II and III meets are Saturday, both starting at 10 a.m.

At Pelham High School, Souhegan High of Amherst, led by distance runner Eli Moskowitz, will be out to repeat as Division II boys’ team champion while Coe-Brown Northwood Academy looks to defend its’ girls’ title. Top-seeded performers include Hannah Parker of Coe-Brown (No. 1 in the 400, 800 and 1,600 meters, and third in the 200), Dominique Twombly of Durham’s Oyster River High (No. 1 in the 100 and 200 meters), Lebanon’s John Cioffredi (the unusual combination of No. 1 in the high jump and No. 2 in the shot put) and Portsmouth’s Nick Ritzo (first in the shot and discus).

In the Division III meet at Inter-Lakes High School of Meredith, teams will attempt to dethrone the Kearsarge Regional of Sutton boys and the Monadnock of East Swanzey girls.

Top individual performers will advance to the state Meet of Champions a week from Saturday at Londonderry High School, with qualifying athletes in that meet moving on to the New England Interscholastic Championships June 14 at Norwell, Mass.
