Shapiro leads Bedford girls

BEDFORD — Senior Drew Shapiro notched eight goals and an assist to lead Division II Bedford to a 20-11 win over Division I Exeter Friday.

The Blue Hawks fell to 11-6. Bedford finished the regular season 14-3. Tournament seedings will be announced next week.

Senior MaKayla Stirling had five goals and an assist. Freshman Kennedy Boyle scored four goals.

Kelly Moran led Exeter with four goals. Ana Toomey added three.

Bedford wasted no time getting on the board with Boyle and Stirling scoring in the first 48 seconds of the game. It was all Bulldogs from there, led by Shapiro. Bedford coach Christine Hodgedon estimates Shapiro has scored 325 goals in her high school career.

“She’s the biggest scoring threat any opponent could face,” said Hodgedon.

This is the final season in Division II for both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams at Bedford. Going out with a title is the goal for Shapiro and her fellow senior teammates.

“Most of us have played together for what seems forever,” says Shapiro. “The title has been our mission.”

Hodgedon said her girls are capable. “We’ve played well against all the bigs. There’s no reason why we can’t compete with them in the next week and a half.”
