From the boat to your town: NHCS begins its second year
New Hampshire Community Seafood has returned for its second year.
“New Hampshire Community Seafood (NHCS) is a cooperative of fishermen and consumers who’ve joined together to protect the ocean, sustain New Hampshire’s fishing industry and support the local economy,” Sarah E. VanHorn, NHCS co-founder/general manager said. “By organizing 12 of New Hampshire’s full-time commercial fishermen into this cooperative, we are able to sell shares of the fishermen’s harvest direct to New Hampshire families and restaurants throughout the state in the form of a community supported fishery (CSF) or a restaurant supported fishery (RSF).”
Those who become a member of the cooperative receive a weekly share of a half-pound to two pounds of fresh fish or seafood, she said.
“We offer familiar favorites like hake and pollock, as well as some of the lesser-known species, like redfish, cape shark, and king whiting, that are plentiful in our New Hampshire waters,” VanHorn said. “Individuals can sign up online to receive weekly shares of fresh fish to be picked up at different locations being offered throughout the state each week of the eight-week season.”
Shares range from $50 to $200.There are 11 pickup points across the state, including Manchester, Concord, Peterborough, Plymouth, Nashua, Portsmouth, Exeter, Dover, Durham and Rollinsford.
“And due to a newly formed partnership with Brookford Farm of Canterbury, New Hampshire Community Seafood has been able to team up with their community supported agriculture program, or CSA, to more widely distribute shares of their fishermen’s fresh catch throughout the state,” VanHorn said.
The new season for the Granite State’s only community supported fishery begins June 9 and runs through the week of Aug. 3.
