RYE — A small fire destroyed a pleasure boat and partially damaged a pier Sunday afternoon in Rye.
According to Rye Fire Lt. Stephen Laing, crews were called to 1870 Ocean Boulevard in Rye Harbor at 4:48 p.m. Sunday, to investigate a report of a boat fire. Upon arrival, they found a 15-20 foot open boat fully engulfed.
The fire was reported under control at 5:08 p.m., but Laing said the boat was deemed a total loss. The pier it was tied to also suffered minor damage.
Lt. Laing said Sunday night that a cause had yet to be determined, but that the boat burst into flame shortly after tying up to the pier. Laing said the cause is not considered suspicious.
The boat, which Laing said is owned by a New Hampshire resident, had four people onboard at the time of the fire. All four exited the vessel safely, and no injuries were reported.
Rye fire station coverage was provided by Greenland, Pease Air Base, and Portsmouth units, while Seabrook ambulance covered one call in Rye while crews were at the pier.
