New Fisher Cat hurler posts win Saturday

It looks like the Toronto Blue Jays may have traded for starting pitcher P.J. Walters at the right time.

Walters was obtained with outfielder Melky Mesa from Kansas City on May 26 for cash, and both players were assigned to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Walters made his first Eastern League start Saturday night, and it was a winning one. He held Altoona to one hit in seven innings to help the Fisher Cats post a 4-0 victory.

Walters struck out 10 and walked three. Third baseman Jarek Cunningham collected Altoona's only hit off Walters, a double, with two outs in the fifth. Altoona had three hits in the game.

Walters also picked up a victory in his last start with Triple-A Omaha. He allowed four hits and two runs in six innings during a victory over Round Rock.

First baseman Andy Burns hit a solo home run in the second inning for the Fisher Cats, who raised their record to 20-35. Altoona, which dropped a 1-0 decision to the Fisher Cats in 12 innings Friday, is also 20-35. Burns, Mesa and third baseman Ryan Schimpf each had two hits for the Fisher Cats, who won their first road series since taking three of four games in New Britain on April 21-24.

Walters was 1-4 with a 7.97 ERA for Omaha before he was traded. He also has major league experience, having pitched in 20 games for the Minnesota Twins.
