Bedford Rep. Laurie Sanborn announces run for House Speaker

CONCORD – Two-term state Rep. Laurie Sanborn announced Tuesday she will seek the House Speaker's post, saying "It's time for new leadership."

Sanborn said she seeks to restore the New Hampshire advantage as she seeks the House's highest post.

"During the past session and more recently, I have continued to hear from Republicans across the state and in the State House, who are looking for a new face, new leadership and new energy to lead the NH House and the party," Sanborn said. "Current and past representatives, as well as committed Republican activists, have been reaching out to me and asking me to consider leading the House forward."

She said she would seek to build a leadership team from the bottom up and use her skills to advance Republican principals and bring people together to solve problems.

"As we look towards 2014 and beyond it's time for a new conservative leader who has demonstrated the skills, leadership and presence to bring our party together," Sanborn said.

She joins former House Speaker Bill O'Brien, R-Mont Vernon, in announcing a run for the speakership.

Although she was an ally of O'Brien's when he served as Speaker, Tuesday Sanborn said "This is not about Bill. This is about the future of the Republican Party and the future of the state."

She is the third ranking Republican House member and created the first House Business Caucus to advance the causes of business.

She represents the towns of Bedford and Amherst.
