ALDI, MonkeySports looking to set up shop in Derry

DERRY — Plans are underway to bring an ALDI food market and MonkeySports sporting goods store to the partially vacant Ocean State Job Lots site, according to town officials.

The two companies are planning to take over part of the former Wal-Mart site that is partially occupied by Ocean State Job Lots, Planning Director George Sioras said.

“We are encouraged by it, and we are happy to see them come here,” Sioras said.

The proposed ALDI store totals 19,000 square feet, and the proposed Monkey Sports store encompasses 47,000 square feet, Sioras said.

Company representatives met with the department’s technical review team last week, Sioras said. The businesses will next appear before the Planning Board, either later this month or in July, Sioras said.

“They are already going through reviews with staff, and that would happen within like the next month,” Sioras said. This would be the second New Hampshire location for ALDI, which opened a store in Salem in 2012.

ALDI sells exclusive brands, and customers bag their own groceries. It carries a much smaller inventory of items than traditional supermarkets, offering about 1,400 items compared to about 30,000 items for a conventional grocery store. A lower inventory provides lower utility and rent costs, allowing the company to pass the savings to customers, according to the company’s website.MonkeySports sells hockey, baseball and lacrosse items. The closest store to New Hampshire is in Norwood, Mass., according to the company’s website.
