South Hampton man to face charges for armed standoff

State police Maj. Chris Aucoin speaks to reporters outside of the Kensington police station on Wednesday about the armed confrontation that Anthony Reardon, 44, had with police. (JAMES A. KIMBLE)

KENSINGTON – An armed South Hampton who called 911 for help late yesterday and set off a confrontation with state and local police will face 9 charges in court this afternoon.

Anthony Reardon, 44, is expected to be arraigned in 10th Circuit Court, Seabrook Division for causing a confrontation with more than 70 officers outside of his home before allegedly fleeing, crashing two police cruisers and striking two others.

Reardon made a 911 call about 5:15 p.m. asking for help. Police said they knew at the time that Reardon had a history with police, but the circumstances of the call suddenly changed when he was spotted in his driveway.

"He was carrying two long rifles at the time," State police Major Chris Aucoin said at a press conference this morning outside the Kensington police station.

During his armed standoff with police, Reardon had a chance to steal two police cruisers, crashing one in a ditch and plowing a second into a pair of police cruisers, according to Aucoin. Reardon was also able to fire shots from one of his weapons, police said.

Reardon remains at a local hospital being treated for minor injuries. He will be arraigned from his hospital bed via video feed, police said.

This story will be updated later today.
