The former Manchester Police station at 351 Chestnut St. (DAVID LANE/UNION LEADER FILE)

Officials mum on prospective sale of old Manchester police station

MANCHESTER — A deal is in the works to sell the former Manchester police station, according to real estate agents involved in the transaction.

On Tuesday, Manchester aldermen listened to an offer and asked for a few small revisions, said Mike Reed, president of Stebbins Commercial Properties, which represents the city in the transaction. He said he’s waiting for papers to be drawn up and signed before he can disclose the terms.

The listing price for the building, located at the corner of Chestnut and Merrimack streets, is $1 million.

Real estate agent Michael Harrington, who represents the potential buyer, said he can’t identify the buyer or plans for the building until the deal is accepted.
“At this point, I don’t feel comfortable that we actually have a deal yet,” Harrington said on Wednesday.

Mayor Ted Gatsas said he doesn’t know what the plans are for the structure, which has been vacant for about a year.
The city initially listed the property for $2.1 million. But the price was lowered to $1 million after The Grossman Companies, commercial property developers in Massachusetts, looked at the property and passed on it.
Reed said the building, which includes jail cells, a shooting range and a walkway to the fire station, is difficult to adapt to other uses.

“Its functionality is singularly purposed. It’s a police department; that’s it,” he said.
