Executive Council OKs $100,000 for slain Brentwood officer's family

CONCORD — The Governor and Executive Council this week formally authorized the payment of $100,000 to Heather Arkell, the widow of Brentwood police officer Stephen Arkell, 48, who was shot to death when he responded to a report of a domestic disturbance May 12.

State law provides for a payment of $100,000 to be made to the family of a New Hampshire police officer or firefighter killed in the line of duty.

The Arkell family also will receive a death benefit of $333,605 from the federal government under the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits Act, signed into law by President Gerald Ford in 1977.

Arkell’s two daughters, Kimberly and Lauren, are each eligible for a four-year college scholarship of about $1,000 a month while attending college full-time, or $500 if attending part-time.

The Hundred Club of New Hampshire, founded in 1966 to provide help to families of officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty, gives the family $10,000 to help with immediate expenses.

The Hundred Club, which consists of more than 1,000 members, also provides up to $26,000 annually to cover college expenses for four years for the officer’s dependents. In the past two years, the group has paid out more than $2.5 million in scholarships and financial aid to dependent widows and children of New Hampshire police officers and firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Hundred Club also remembers family members with gifts on their birthdays, at Christmas and other holidays, and provides financial aid for children to attend summer camp.

Fundraising efforts are continuing to assist the Arkell family. A car wash is being held Saturday, from 8 a.m. to mid-afternoon at Exeter Motor Works, 150 Epping Road, Exeter.

Donations can also be made online at www.stevearkell.com or at any TD Bank branch to the Mrs. Stephen Arkell Fund.
