Amateur radio group event to be held at Taylor Mill in Derry

DERRY — A call is going out for the public to attend a demonstration on emergency communications by members of an amateur radio group on Saturday, June 28 at the Taylor Mill historic site.

Members of the West Rockingham Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES) will be on hand to greet the public and show off their skills at Taylor Mill on Island Pond Road, according to a news release.

The annual event, called “Field Day,” is the climax of the week-long “Amateur Radio Week” sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio.

During the event the public can learn about amateur or “ham” radio and how it can help in emergencies. The radio operators will join with thousands of other radio operators across the country showing off their emergency capabilities.

ARES members will begin setting up their emergency radio station at 10 a.m.

Ham radio operators provide backup communication for everything from the American Red Cross to FEMA and even local cities and town, the release said. The operating event officially begins at 2 p.m.

When communication lines are down in a storm, hams can keep communicating through their radios.

According to the field day new release, more than 700,000 amateur radio licenses have been issued in America and more than 2.5 million globally. There are more than 5,200 licensees in the Granite State, according to the release.

The Taylor Mill historic site is part of the 71-acre Ballard State Forest in Derry. The ‘‘up and down’’ sawmill will also be open to the public and on display.

For information on the event, call Jay D. Carter at 603-770-5411 or email ka1rvr@arri.net.
