Orioles draft Goffstown, SNHU infielder Palmer

Southern New Hampshire University third baseman Riley Palmer was selected by the Baltimore Orioles Saturday in the 31st round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Palmer, a Goffstown High graduate, hit .267 for the Penmen this season, with nine home runs and 37 runs batted in. He had a .361 on-base percentage and a team-leading .456 slugging percentage.

For his three-year SNHU career, Palmer hit .248 in 144 games, with 16 homers and 87 runs driven in. His OBP was .339 and he slugged. 434. His numbers improved each season.

Palmer, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior, was the 931st selection overall.

Franklin's Derrick Sylvester, a starting pitcher who also played for SNHU last season, was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers eight picks after Palmer was chosen.

Sylvester was 9-2 with a 2.59 ERA, and struck out 100 batters (32 walks) in 93 1/3 innings during his senior season. He tossed four complete games and struck out at least 10 batters in three outings.

The Chicago Cubs picked Franklin Pierce center fielder Calvin Graves in the 27th round (799th overall). Graves hit .319 last season, when he ranked 18th among Division II players in stolen bases (31). Among Northeast-10 players, Graves finished the season third in stolen bases, fourth in hits (67), tied for eighth in runs scored (38) and 15th in batting average.
