Ashuelot P.O. Box holders will go to Winchester for now

ASHUELOT — Damage to the Ashuelot Post Office on Main Street caused by an alleged drunk driver Sunday is still being assessed, communications spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service Melissa Lohnes said Wednesday.

The extent of the damage and the cost of repairing the building are not known yet, so it is unclear when the post office would reopen.

“We’re asking all the P.O. Box holders to visit the Winchester Post Office. They just need to bring a photo ID for identification and they can pick up their mail,” Lohnes said.

For all other post office services residents can go to the Winchester location or any other post office that is convenient to them, she said.

The Ashuelot Post office building sustained significant damage Sunday after a Keene man drove a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass into it.

Gage B. Gushlaw, 21, of Keene was charged with aggravated DWI among numerous other charges.

Winchester police responded to Keene Road in Winchester Sunday at 7:05 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance taking place in a stopped car.

Police arrived to find Gushlaw had been in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend, a 24-year-old Keene woman, who had been taken away from the scene by a Winchester resident. Gushlaw then left the scene to follow the car that was taking his girlfriend back to Keene.

Police were still on the scene taking information when Gushlaw sped by the officers on Keene Road, in the direction of downtown Winchester.

Police pursued the Oldsmobile, but lost sight of Gushlaw.

Hinsdale police responded to assist and saw Gushlaw traveling westbound on Route 119 at a high rate of speed.

Gushlaw reportedly lost control of the Oldsmobile and crossed Route 119 and into a fence. The Oldsmobile continued into the side of the Ashuelot Post Office at 8 Main St.

The Oldsmobile came to a rest halfway outside the far wall of the post office building.

After a short foot chase, he was apprehended by police and charged with driving after revocation, conduct after an accident, disobeying an officer, reckless driving, aggravated DWI, simple assault, speeding and passing a solid line on the highway.

Gushlaw was arraigned in the 8th Circuit Court District Division in Keene Monday where his bail was held at $10,000. He is expected to appear again in court July 28.
