NHIAA D-IV Baseball: Sunapee blanks Pittsfield

PLYMOUTH — Pittsfield allowed just two hits but second-seeded Sunapee scored the only runs and knocked off the defending champs, 2-0, in a NHIAA Division IV baseball tournament semifinal Wednesday at Plymouth State University.

The Lakers advance to the final at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester Saturday at 1 p.m. They will take on the winner of No. 4 Colebrook-No. 8 Gorham game to be played Thursday at PSU.

Panthers pitcher Kris Perkins allowed two runs on two hits and four walks. Winning Lakers pitcher James Fitzgerald gave up five hits, all singles, and two walks. He also had a base hit for and RBI. Mike Platt hit a triple in the fifth inning. Two of Sunapee’s three losses this year were to Pittsfield.

“It’s an awesome feeling to beat them here when we haven’t beat them in two years,” said Fitzgerald.

“Fitzy pitched a whale of a game, and our kids made some awesome plays in the field,” said Lakers coach Thomas Frederick. “The plays at home and at third kept them off the board.”

Pittsfield lost two base runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, one at third and another at home plate.

“That was on me. I’ve been aggressive all year,” said Panthers coach Rob Stockman. “It was a tight game and we just wanted to make things happen.”

Fitzgerald singled home Ben Robinson to make it 1-0 Lakers in the fourth. Platt scored from third on an error when Pittsfield right fielder Jesse Slater dropped a fly ball.

Third-seeded Pittsfield finished its season with 15-4 record.
