Mass. man gets prison time for hitting sheriff's cruiser after drug buy

BRENTWOOD — A Lawrence, Mass., man was sentenced to three to six years in state prison for crashing into a deputy sheriff’s car while trying to escape arrest on drug charges.

Jonathan Delgado, 30, pleaded guilty on Friday to seven counts of violating the controlled drug act and charges of criminal mischief, resisting arrest and disobeying a police officer.

Delgado was arrested last Dec. 11 on Range Road in Windham after a month-long drug investigation by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Drug Task Force and Windham police.

Assistant County Attorney Jerome Blanchard said that a confidential informant tipped investigators that Delgado was selling crack cocaine and heroin. Undercover deputies set up controlled purchases of the two drugs between Nov. 22 and Dec. 11.
Immediately after the drug buy on Dec. 11, Delgado fled when deputies and police moved in to arrest him and he struck a deputy’s cruiser and Windham police cruiser with his car.

Sheriff’s deputies had Delgado’s vehicle boxed in, but he had to be forcibly removed from his vehicle to be taken into custody, according to the sheriff’s department. The two cruisers sustained minor damage. Delgado had three grams of heroin and three grams of crack cocaine on him at the time of his arrest, the sheriff’s department said.
Judge N. William Delker sentenced Delgado to serve the three- to six-year sentence on the drug convictions. Had he been convicted at trial, Delgado could have faced up to 3 ½ to 7 years in prison on each of the seven drug charges.
Delgado received a 9-month county jail sentence on the misdemeanor charges, which run concurrent to the prison sentence. He has already spent 182 days in jail.

Delgado will also have to pay restitution to the sheriff’s department and undergo any drug and alcohol treatment or counseling ordered by corrections officials.
