Chester Library’s summer reading program set to begin

CHESTER — Science experiments and a garden party are some of the events planned as part of the Chester Library’s summer reading program.

Open to all cardholders from preschoolers to adults, the program runs June 21 to Aug.15 in the library at 3 Chester St. It is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but recommended, said Diane Arrato-Gavrish, assistant director and head of youth services.

The program is set to begin with a kickoff party on Saturday, June 21, in the multi-purpose room. It will begin at 2:30 p.m. and will feature Jungle Jim and his Star Wars Balloon Show! Registration is required for children wishing to participate in the Jungle Jim show.

During the garden party, participants will plant flowers around the library.

In addition, a “Frozen Party” to celebrate the movie is also planned, she said.

This marks the first year Arrato-Gavrish has served as the children’s librarian.

“It’s really been fun and it’s going well,” she said of her new role.

She has extensive experience as a librarian and has worked as a library director in other New Hampshire communities.

The summer reading program schedule includes:

Story time every Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. for preschoolers; science experiments every Monday at 6:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 4 p.m. for school-aged children; and weekly themes include science and art, science and cooking, science and play, etc., she said.
