Two-state chase ends in crash; Mass. man arrested; passenger claims kidnap

June 16. 2014 1:17PM

A Peabody, Mass. man is under arrest after a two-state police chase Sunday afternoon from Salem, N.H. to Boston's North End, where he allegedly crashed a stolen pickup truck and fled the scene, leaving behind a 27-year-old passenger who told investigators he'd been kidnapped.

The incident, which reached speeds of 85 mph along Interstate 93 South, actually began in Nashua, where a red GMC pickup was reported stolen, according to Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patton.

Patton said the truck already was being pursued by Windham police on I-93 South when it crossed into Salem and a Salem officer took over. That officer followed it to the Massachusetts border while alerting Massachusetts State Police to the pursuit.

Salem police called off the chase at 4:38 p.m. at the border and Massachusetts State Police took over.

Several minutes later, Massachusetts troopers took a report from another vehicle that had been sideswiped by the pickup on I-93 near the intersection with Route 495.

At 4:52 p.m., Mass. Trooper Michael Rockett, assigned to the state police barracks in Medford ,Mass., reported he was behind the fleeing pickup truck heading south into Stoneham. He tried to stop the truck, but it kept going.

State police headquarters approved the pursuit and assumed command and control, according to a state police news release.

The truck sped up to 85 mph and, a few minutes later, it entered the Tip O'Neill Tunnel.

At 5:07 p.m., Boston police reported the truck had crashed on Lewis Street in the North End and the driver had fled on foot.

The passenger, who police said was a Peabody man, told investigator he he had been kidnapped.

Just before 6 p.m., Boston police arrested the driver, identified as Michael Daniels, 33, of Peabody, at North Station. Police said he had a pellet pistol on him.

Both Daniels and the passenger, whose name police have not released, were transported to the State Police Barracks in Medford, where police continue to investigate.

Daniels was to be arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court, Central Division, but a clerk said in the morning the paperwork had not been sent over and Daniels had not been transported.

Police have not said what charges Daniels is facing.
