Pinkerton graduates hear headmaster's last cheer

Monday marked the final day at Pinkerton Academy of Derry for not only the 690 graduates moving on, but for one of its long-time educators as well.

Joining the group leaving the school during its graduation ceremony at Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester was Mary Anderson, who has been at the school for 39 years, the last 11 of which have been as its headmaster.

“You are members of the last class that I, as headmaster, send on its way,” Anderson said. “I do it with enormous pride in your achievements and the feeling that your potential is unlimited.”

More than $9 million in scholarships and awards were presented to the Class of 2014, at the top of which was valedictorian Ian Vossoughi.

“With both our major, outstanding triumphs and our down-to-earth, delightful additions to every day, we will leave behind quite a history as we depart from our school,” Vossoughi said. “I don’t know who, or even what, the students of Pinkerton’s 200th year class will be, but I certainly hope they will look back upon us and realize what ordinary and extraordinary lives we have all led so far.”

Salutatorian Natalie Kukshtel talked about moving forward and continuing to improve in her address to the graduating class.

“I encourage you, Class of 2014, to follow the example Pinkerton has set for us by embracing change,” Kukshtel said. “Even if it means taking a risk and trying something new in order to move forward.”

Rounding out the top 10 for the Class of 2014 were Karla Accorto, Kinsey Manchester, Xinyuan Zhang, Diana Calvetti, Ariana Moran, Nicholas Messina, Paige Welch and Sarah Lambert.

“I can only hope that your experiences and achievements at Pinkerton Academy will help you make all your dreams come true,” Anderson said. “God speed and good luck Class of 2014. Now go and live your dreams.”
