Bruins won’t re-sign Thornton

After seven seasons in Boston, fourth-line wing and popular enforcer Shawn Thornton is no longer a Bruin. Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli delivered the news on Monday, informing the the 37-year-old veteran that the team will not re-sign him.

“I told him that he was one of the most significant acquisitions we made — one, for the role that he played, two, for the person that he is,” Chiarelli said. “It was nice to rehash his time. It was sad to tell him he wasn’t coming back. I wished him well.”

Thornton, who had career highs of 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points during Boston’s Stanley Cup season of 2010-11, totaled five goals and three assists in 2013-14.

His departure is part of a trend away from enforcers in the NHL. Two former Manchester Monarchs tough guys, George Parros (Canadiens) and Kevin Westgarth (Flames) will join Thornton among the ranks of unrestricted free agents on July 1.
