MANCHESTER -- City police and the state police bomb squad converged on 467 Maple St. Wednesday about noon after being called by Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies who had alerted them to a suspicious device.
A member of the bomb squad was suited up and entered the apartment building.
Manchester police Sgt. Joe Mucci said state police deemed the device "safe."
Hillsborough County Sherrif Jim Hardy said deputy sheriffs were at the address to serve an eviction notice and discovered a device they deemed suspicious and called Manchester police, who called in the state police bomb squad.
A bomb squad member has taken a preliminary look at the device, according to Hardy.
Neighbors of the building, near Amherst Street and Manchester Central High School, said police were called about what appeared to be two pipe bombs at the address.
Hardy said there is only one device.
The immediate neighborhood around the three-story brick and white-sided vinyl apartment building was evacuated while police investigated.
