Mass. cyclist killed in Laconia crash
LACONIA - A Massachusetts motorcyclist died early Saturday morning after crashing on Lakeside Avenue, and police say speed appears to have been a factor in the crash.
Police identified the operator as David Czarnota, 24, of North Reading, Mass.
According to a press release, Czarnota's motorcycle went off the west side of the roadway at Scenic Road shortly after 1 a.m. and crashed.
Czarnota was severely injured and was taken by ambulance to Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
State police are investigating and asked anyone with information about the crash to call Trooper James Powers at 666-3333.
Quiet night in area of recent violence
MANCHESTER - An area that has seen a rash of gang violence since March was quiet Friday night, Manchester police said.
"Last night was pretty uneventful," Lt. Todd Boucher said Saturday afternoon.
A rivalry along the Laurel Street area between gangs calling themselves the "OTL," an acronym for Orange to Laurel streets, and the "180" has seen a riot involving the use of clubs and baseball bats in March and three shootings, most recently on Thursday night, in which a 17-year-old boy was shot in the leg.
Boucher said police have stepped up patrols in the area to try to curb violence.
"We'll be out again tonight to keep up a high visibility out there," he said.
