BERLIN — An 11-year-old boy who was thrown from an ATV while descending a rocky hill and run over by the vehicle was able to get back on and ride from a remote trail to an ambulance that was waiting for him, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said.

According to a Fish and Game release, the boy was on the back of an ATV driven by Bryan Crivac in Success Township when the accident happened at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The boy was with a group of riders.

The ATV ran over the boy’s leg after in an area that had limited cell phone coverage, the release said. The boy’s uncle immediately rode 15 miles to Berlin to call for help as Crivac and the boy got back on the ATV and started heading back on the trail. The Berlin Fire Department sent an ATV to meet them along the way and found them about three miles from the trailhead, but the boy was well enough to continue with Crivac the remaining distance to meet with the ambulance at about 8:20 p.m.

The boy was taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital.

Fish and Game said the boy was wearing a helmet and credited the group of riders with speeding up the rescue process by acting quickly.
