Warning: IRS scammers are calling NH taxpayers

CONCORD — The Better Business Bureau Wednesday said a Hooksett man who received phone messages that claimed to be from the Internal Revenue Service, threatening to arrest him if he didn’t pay his taxes, was savvy enough to call the BBB before calling the phone number left for him.

Jamie Shomphe, communications director for the BBB, said there are seasonal scams and this is the season for IRS scams. Because its just a few months past the filing date, there will be some people who haven’t paid their taxes yet and that is who the scammers are hoping to fool.

She said the scammers are “spoofing” the phone number to the real IRS hotline, which makes the calls look legitimate.

Shomphe said she has been in contact with her counterparts around the country and the scam is in operation in many areas. She said the Hooksett man was smart to call the BBB before responding to the two messages left on his answering machine.

Shomphe said the IRS has made it clear that it will not contact consumers via telephone or email. If the IRS has business with you, it will contact you through a letter in the mail.

If you have been targeted by this scam, Shomphe urged making a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission, using the “FTC Complaint Assistant” at FTC.gov.
