MANCHESTER — The New Hampshire Fisher Cats edged the New Britain Rock Cats 2-1 in front of 4,317 fans at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium Thursday night.
The Fisher Cats (32-44) and Rock Cats (41-33) will play a doubleheader tonight beginning at 6:05. Probable starters for New Hampshire are Radhames Liz (0-1) and Casey Lawrence (3-4) vs. Tyler Duffey (3-2) and Mark Hamburger (1-0).
The Fisher Cats broke a 0-0 deadlock with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. K.C Hobson drew a two-out walk and Derrick Chung’s bunt down the third base line went for a single.
New Britain pitcher Jason Wheeler looked to be out of trouble when Kevin Nolan hit a fly ball to right field, but Rock Cats outfielder Reynaldo Rodriguez lost the ball in the lights and misty rain, allowing it to drop behind him. Nolan wound up at second base and both Hobson and Chung scored for the 2-0 NH lead.
The Rock Cats’ Aaron Hicks blasted a homer well over the right field fence in the eighth inning off reliever Scott Gracey to cut the Fishers’ lead to 2-1.
Gregory Infante came on to work the ninth on the mound for New Hampshire, allowing a one-out single to Kennys Vargas before retiring Rodriguez. Brandon Waring singled to make it first-and-second, but Infante got Brad Boyer to fly out to right to close the game and earn his eighth save.
Austin Bibens-Dirkx got the win to improve to 3-2, working three innings in relief of starter Scott Copeland, who left after three frames of no-hit pitching.
