The Valenti Modified Series is at Lee USA Friday night for the Port City 100. The VMS Mods were at Stafford last weekend and Todd Szegedy of Ridgefield, Conn., came away with the win — his second of the season.

Szegedy drives the Stuart Automotive No. 85 for owner Kevin Stuart. He’s a past NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion and the most recent Whelen Modified winner at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Szegedy recently told Lee USA and Modified Series announcer John Spence that he feels he needs to do better on short tracks. “I want to start mastering and getting better at the short tracks,” he said. “It’s a little bit of a weak area. Seekonk has been one of my worst tracks, but we ran very well there last time, so I’m starting to get the hang of it. Just a matter of time before I get wins on them.”

The Granite State Pro Stock Series appears Saturday at Star Speedway. Larry Gelinas is the most recent GSPSS winner, having been the alpha wolf at Hudson.

Jeff White posted his first top-five finish of the season by winning the ACT Late Model event at White Mountain. The Winthrop, Maine., veteran had to hold off Wayne Helliwell Jr. to pull off the upset. White Mountain regular Travis Fadden was third, followed by point leader Joey Polewarczyk Jr. of Hudson and Vermont teenager Emily Packard.

ACT holds its answer to the Oxford 250 at Airborne Park Speedway in Plattsburgh, N.Y., July 20.

Speaking of Oxford, ISMA showed up with 17 cars for a 75-lap event that included Bentley Warren last Friday — a race won by Lou Cicconi, with Mark Sammut second and Jon McKennedy third. McKennedy won the next day at Autodrome Chaudiere ahead of Rob Summers and Cicconi.

Twenty year-old Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine., won the ARCA 200 at Michigan International Speedway in his first ever ARCA start. Theriault is scheduled to compete in the Nationwide Series Sta-Green 200 for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports team at Loudon on Saturday, July 12.

White Mountain started 16 Strictly Stocks in the Hill Heating feature that was won by Jody Sicard of Concord.

The NEMA Midgets and the NEMA Lites race this Saturday at Twin State Speedway.

Hudson Speedway moves to its summertime starting schedule of 5 p.m. this Sunday with a card that includes the Outlaw Late Models, Rookie Stocks, Roadrunners, Thunder Lights and V-6 Modifieds.

Londonderry high schooler Max Dolliver won the Roadrunner feature at Hudson last Sunday. Jason Ryan of Salem drove to his third Rookie Stock win. Jimmy Renfrew Jr. wired the field for his first Thunder Light win.

Bear Ridge is planning an early “Fourth of July” fireworks show this Saturday and the USAC Dirt Midget Assn. Midgets are in town.

Services for Jim Boniface will be held at Monadnock Speedway this Friday at 2:30 pm. He loved racing. He began as a grass-roots racer and ended his career driving modified cars at the highest level with more than 200 wins during the span of his career.

Twenty-five years ago, on or about this date, Dick McCabe won the Grand National North All Pro 150 at Star Speedway, Lee USA Tech Director Buzzy Bezanson was heading off to Thunder Road after winning the ACT New England 300 at Beech Ridge (as a Coors Tour rookie) and Dave Blanchard was leading defending Bud Light Lightning champion Jeff Crowley of Groton, Mass., by seven points in the Hudson Speedway standings.
