Editorial: USNH’s freeze a good start

June 29. 2014 6:44PM

University System of New Hampshire trustees voted on Friday to freeze tuition for four years rather than the two they had previously promised. It is about time.

“This unprecedented step would encourage more New Hampshire students to pursue higher education opportunities in the Granite State, and help us to build an even larger pipeline of talent to support the state’s economy,” Pamela Diamantis, trustees chairman, said in a news release.

You don’t say.

It doesn’t take a Ph.D. in economics to know that high costs discourage students from attending college and higher state taxes to subsidize tuition discourage people and businesses from moving to New Hampshire.

Instead of waiting four years to ask for more money, USNH should work now to cut costs. A tuition cut would do even more to attract students and help our economy.
