Two arrested in campus attack on Dartmouth College student

Mark Ruppel, left, and Troy Schwarz.

HANOVER -- Two men are under arrest in an attack on a Dartmouth College student early Wednesday morning.

Police said Mark J. Ruppel, 26, of Canaan, and Troy C. Schwarz, 20, of Lebanon, hit and kicked Hubert Clark, 23, in a surprise attack just after midnight as the college student was walking across the Dartmouth Green.

Police said Clark was assaulted and robbed by a group of men who continued to strike and kick him after he was down on the ground.

Clark was taken by ambulance to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon where he was treated for injuries police described as not life-threatening.

Shortly after the assault, Officer Alex Tucker located three men in the area who fit the description of Clark's assailants and detained them in order to collect evidence that could possibly connect them to the crime.

During the preliminary investigation, officers determined two of the three men were involved in the attack and that money and property were stolen from Clark in the robbery. Police said one of the men arrested had the property on him. He was not identified in a news release concerning the assault and arrests.

Ruppel and Schwarz are charged with robbery, second degree assault and falsifying physical evidence. They are to be arraigned today in 2nd Circuit Court, Lebanon District Division.

Hanover police officers were assisted in the investigation by Trooper Christopher O'Toole of Troop F.

Police continue to investigate and said it is possible others will be arrested and that Ruppel and Schwarz will be facing additional charges.
