Three-alarm fire levels lakeside New London home

NEW LONDON -- A single family home fronting Lake Sunapee was destroyed in a Wednesday morning three-alarm blaze.

Fire Chief Jason Lyon said about 2 a.m. a Sunapee resident called 911 to report seeing a house in flames across the lake from her residence. Lyon said fire crews from both New London and Newbury were dispatched because the address and the exact location of the building were unknown.

However, Lyon said as they were being dispatched, the fire department received a fire alarm from 29 Boulder Point Road, a two-story wood frame, single family home. When crews arrived on scene, they found the two-story building fully in flames.

Immediately two-alarms were sounded, but it quickly went to three alarms as tanker trucks were needed to shuttle in water from Pike Brook because of a dry hydrant.

No one was home at the time the fire broke.

Lyon said the residence, assessed at $730,000 and listed in the town's online assessors' database as being owned by Robert Carr, was completely destroyed.

"It's a total loss. There's not much left," Lyon said.

What caused the fire is undetermined "at this point because of the significant extent of damage," he said.

In 1992, the home was damaged in an electrical fire and, since then, it has been renovated and some construction was currently taking place, according to the fire chief.

The state's Fire Marshal Office has been contacted.
