Derry Council mulls community survey

DERRY — Town councilors want to gauge what’s important to Derry residents through a community-wide survey.

Councilors said at a workshop Tuesday night they want to know what issues are important to the community.

“We can’t lead and we can’t govern if we are in the dark for what’s important for people who are out there,” said Council Chairman Mark Osborne.

Councilor David Fischer asked if the councilors could discuss pulling together a community survey before finalizing their goals. In doing so, Fischer said it’s important to have a well-crafted plan, with items that are “measurable and doable.”
Rather than listing a number of goals that councilors aren’t likely to achieve, he suggested it would be better to limit them to two or three.

Councilor Michael Fairbanks said he hoped a survey would achieve better results than a poll that was conducted about six years ago.
In that survey, 1,000 questionnaires were sent out to residents but only 89 people, or approximately 9 percent, responded.

Acting Administrator Larry Budreau said he will have to do some research on the technical aspects of conducting surveys before reporting back to councilors.
