Swimmer dies in Ossipee on Fourth of July

OSSIPEE — Authorities say a 65-year-old man died after he was stricken while swimming in Duncan Lake on Independence Day.

According to a news release from New Hampshire Marine Patrol, the man was swimming across a cove around 5 p.m. when he began having difficulty. Friends and relatives saw him struggling and swam out to help.

The man went under, but the other swimmers managed to find him within about 10 minutes and brought him to shore. There, first responders from Ossipee Fire and Rescue and police officers attempted to revive the victim, but they were not successful.

The man's identity was being withheld until his family could be notified.
