Liz brilliant as Fishers win twinbill opener; second game suspended

MANCHESTER — It’s not easy to beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats these days. Especially when they’re playing at home.

The Fisher Cats tied the franchise record for consecutive home wins Monday by beating New Britain, 2-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. The victory stretched New Hampshire’s home winning streak to 10 games.

The second game was suspended by rain with New Britain leading 2-0 after two innings. The game will be completed as part of a doubleheader at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium on Tuesday night beginning at 6:05. The second game will begin 30 minutes after the completion of the first contest, which will resume in the top of the third. Both games are scheduled to go seven innings.

New Hampshire (42-45) also won 10 consecutive home games in 2004, when the Fisher Cats played at Gill Stadium.

Radhames Liz pitched a complete game (seven innings) for New Hampshire, which has won five in a row overall, and 11 of its last 12. Liz held New Britain to two hits, struck out eight and did not walk a batter. His fastball was clocked as high as 98 mph.

The Rock Cats (42-44) have failed to score more than three runs in 11 of their last 13 games.

New Britain’s Jason Wheeler allowed six hits in six innings and took the loss.

Right fielder Michael Crouse hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to increase New Hampshire’s lead to 2-0. The Fisher Cats scored their other run in the first, when Mike McDade’s double drove in Jon Berti from second. Berti doubled earlier in the inning. Berti and Crouse each had two hits in the victory.

The Rock Cats have lost five in a row and 11 of their last 12. New Britain has also lost nine in a row on the road.
