Monarchs name Hajt assistant

Chris Hajt was named assistant coach of the Manchester Monarchs on Tuesday. He joins the staff of newly named head coach Mike Stothers.

The 36-year-old Hajt, the son of former Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bill Hajt (1973-87), recently held the position of assistant general manager of the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League.

Hajt, also a defenseman, played his junior hockey at Guelph from 1994-98. He played 222 regular-season games over four seasons and recorded 92 points.

He appeared in two Memorial Cup championships as a player, first in 1996, and then again in 1998, reaching the championship game before falling to Portland. Hajt also represented Team USA in the 1997 and 1998 World Junior Championships, winning a silver medal with the team in 1997.

He was drafted in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers and appeared in six regular-season NHL games, one with Edmonton and five with the Washington Capitals.

In the American Hockey League, he logged 477 regular-season games, playing for the Lowell Lock Monsters (2005-06), Portland Pirates (2002-05) and the Hamilton Bulldogs (1998-02).
