Rock Cats' Vasquez blanks Fishers

New Hampshire Union Leader

July 10. 2014 10:11PM

MANCHESTER — New Britain’s Virgil Vasquez hadn’t earned a victory in more than a month, but you wouldn’t have known it by the way he pitched Thursday night.

Vasquez, who pitched in the major leagues for Detroit (2007) and Pittsburgh (2009), tossed a complete game and held the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to five hits in New Britain’s 4-0 victory.

Vasquez, who had lost his last three starts, struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter. It was his first victory since June 6 and raised his record to 5-5.

Center fielder Dalton Pompey, catcher Derrick Chung, first baseman Mike McDade, third baseman Andy Burns and shortstop Kevin Nolan had New Hampshire’s hits. Three of the Fisher Cats’ five runners were erased on the base paths.

The loss dropped New Hampshire’s record to 43-48. New Britain evened its record at 45-45.

New Britain scored all four runs against New Hampshire starting pitcher Matt Boyd, who allowed eight hits in five innings. One of those hits was a solo home run by first baseman Kennys Vargas that made it 3-0 in the fourth. Boyd (0-3) struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.

Blake McFarland, called up from Dunedin on Thursday, pitched three innings of scoreless relief before Scott Gracey pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Rock Cats scored a run in the first, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. The big blow in the fifth was Mike Kvasnicka’s bases-loaded double that scored two runs.
