Portsmouth police locate, arrest driver after accident

PORTSMOUTH - After receiving a report of a car having driven through a fence on Elwyn Road, Portsmouth police responded to the scene Saturday, at approximately 7:10 p.m.

A caller reported seeing a woman walking away from the scene, where a white 2001 Toyota Camry, had swerved off the road. The vehicle had been headed toward Rye, and struck a telephone pole before colliding through a wooden fence at 250 Elwyn Road, before stopping on the lawn of 264 Elwyn Road.

Officers arrived with a K-9 unit to determine the whereabouts of the driver. During the search, a witness reported a woman that fit the description from the original report, who had jumped into a black pickup truck, which sped away.

With the assistance of the Rye Police Department, officers were able to locate the driver, Katherine Supple, 26, of Rye, and placed her in custody at approximately 8 p.m. Supple was charged with conduct after an accident, operating after suspension and breach of bail. She is being held without bail due to the breach of bail charge and will be arraigned on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Portsmouth District Court.  She had been out on bail for charges by the North Hampton Police Department and the Thorton Police Department for the motor vehicle related offenses of operating after suspension and driving while intoxicated, respectively. There were no indications that Supple was impaired upon her arrest Friday.

No one was injured in the accident.

A section of Elwyn Road was closed for approximately two hours, then adjusted to one lane while the pole was being repaired.

The road is expected to be opened back to two lane traffic by Saturday morning. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.  Further charges could result from a criminal investigation that has yet to be completed against the male driver of the pickup truck.
