“He served as a role model for his boys (and for all of us) by his character, dedication and commitment,” Selectman John Sherman said in a statement. “He passed the test of being a local hero by helping to make Plaistow a better place to live.”

“Tom and I are incredibly saddened to learn of the loss of Plaistow Police Chief Stephen Savage,” Gov. Maggie Hassan said in a statement. “Throughout his distinguished career, Chief Savage demonstrated an unparalleled dedication to public safety, serving for nearly 30 years as Plaistow’s Chief and 10 years as Haverhill’s. His commitment to protecting his fellow citizens helped keep New Hampshire one of the safest states in the nation, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”

Sen. Kelly Ayotte responded by way of Twitter after learning of the Plaistow police chief's passing, tweeting that she was ""Sorry to hear the sad news that my friend Chief Steve Savage has died. He was a great man. Am praying for his wife Kristin & his boys."

Savage was a Vietnam War veteran who volunteered for the town’s recreational programs. He is survived by his wife, Kristin, and sons Billy and Michael.

“He was well-respected by the citizens of Plaistow and his colleagues,” Town Manager Sean Fitzgerald said. “His presence and absolutely terrific sense of humor, coupled with his intense ‘can-do’ drive will be greatly missed.
