Man wearing women's clothes arrested after chase

KINGSTON — A man wearing women’s clothing was arrested Saturday after leading police on a chase through seven communities in New Hampshire.

Kingston police say Donald Smith, 23, of Plaistow drove his vehicle into a church being built in East Kingston. According to Kingston police, officers from eight towns and state police were unable to find him after he fled the crash scene on foot.

After the search ended, a Kingston police officer allegedly found Smith on Mill Road wearing women’s clothing as a disguise, after allegedly breaking into a nearby store to obtain the garments.

Smith was initially stopped by police in Hampton Falls around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say he fled, leading police on a chase that extended through Exeter, Hampton, back through Hampton Falls, Seabrook, Kensington, East Kingston and then Kingston. Police were concerned he was armed, after he allegedly threw a bag they thought contained ammunition from the window of his vehicle.

Smith is charged with criminal mischief, disobeying a police officer, reckless conduct, reckless operation, conduct after an accident and theft. He is being held on $25,000 cash bail and is expected to be arraigned today in Rockingham County court.

More charges against Smith could be filed by police departments involved in the chase.
