Joe McQuaid's Publisher's Notes: My favorite things from one week this summer

New Hampshire Union Leader Publisher

MY FAVORITE READER question from last week: What kind of idiots run the Union Leader?

I had not thought of it before, but apparently there are different kinds.

My favorite errors from last week’s newspapers (and this may just give aid and comfort to the “idiot’’ questioner), included our citing the rare date of “March 36’’ in one news story (I think it was a Schmoozeday); and in another reporting that some roads were “barely impassable’’ in one New Hampshire town not long ago.

“Lassie! Go get help! The road is barely impassable!’’

My favorite quote from last week was one I read in a wonderful little book titled “One Summer, America 1927.’’

“Three generations of imbeciles are enough.’’

The scary thing is that the quote was from Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in a 7-1 decision authorizing the sterilization of a woman and her sister. This was when the philosophy of eugenics was all the rage. I am wondering if the person who asked about us “idiots’’ is a fan.

Apart from that chilling item, the book was a delightful history lesson involving Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Capone, and occasional floods, hot spells, and tabloid murder coverage, all in one summer.

My favorite round of golf last week (or of the summer, for that matter) was with FOUR women.

The ladies were great. They don’t swear (or perhaps they were just trying not to offend my delicate sensibilities). They bring coffee and blueberry muffins.

They play at a good pace, but don’t rush you.

They are all very encouraging to each other, as opposed to the guys, who say things like, “oh, gee, that’s too bad!’’ with sarcasm dripping from every word.

And the ladies play fun little side games. I think they call one “puttsies,’’ in which you try to make the fewest putts per hole. So they get quite clever by knocking their approach shots really close to the green without going on, thus reducing the chances of three-putting.

They said they are thinking of making me an honorary member of the women’s golf association.

I’d be honored.
