Derry: I-93 widening update tonight

DERRY — New Hampshire Department of Transportation representatives are scheduled to give an update on the Interstate 93 widening project at the Town Council’s Tuesday night meeting. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the third-floor meeting room of the Municipal Center.

During the presentation, the Exit 4A project could also be up for discussion.

Exit 4A has been lumped in with the I-93 widening project that is planned to run from Salem to Manchester, according to officials.

Last month, councilors said they have concerns that the Exit 4A proposal could soar to a cost of more than $100 million.

The project now stands at about $50 million, and the state has identified approximately $19 million in funding it would pay, said Peter Stamnas, a project manager in the New Hampshire Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Highway Design. The funds would come from a state gas tax increase, which would leave approximately $30 million for Derry and Londonderry to split, Stamnas said.

Designed as an alternate to downtown Derry, Exit 4A would include construction of a one mile connecting road from the interchange off Interstate 93 to Ross’ North High Street and Folsom Road and Tsienetto Road. The project is being sponsored by Derry and Londonderry, with DOT serving in an advisory capacity, Stamnas said

Construction of Exit 4A, though, could still be years out as it has remained in a kind of limbo since an initial draft was presented about seven years ago, Stamnas said. The final environmental statement hasn’t been issued yet and is still only in the planning stages, Stamnas said.
