Salem academy a learning opportunity about law enforcement

SALEM — Residents interested in finding out more about a life in law enforcement or the workings of the Salem police department are being invited to sign up for the fifth annual Citizen Police Academy.

The academy runs the gamut of the workings of the police department: from the hiring process, to the procedure used in bringing criminal cases to trial, to the specialty units within the department such as the canine unit, detective division, and the accident reconstruction team, according to police Lt. Joel Dolan.

While there may be many who take part in the academy that are interested in finding out more about a career in law enforcement, he said there are others who are interested in learning about the department in general and might want to use that knowledge for future volunteering opportunities.“We get people of all ages, from those right out of high school, up to people in their 70s,” said Dolan. “So it is appropriate for all ages over 18.”

The class size is limited to about 15, and is generally filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Citizen Police Academy is made possible from a donation from the Salem Exchange Club and is open to Salem residents over 18 and Salem business owners.

Classes are held Tuesday nights from Sept. 9 until Nov. 18. Most classes will be held at the Salem Police Department between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., with one Saturday class.

Anyone interested in the academy is encouraged to apply by contacting Lt. Joel Dolan at (603) 893-1911 or jdolan@salempd.com.

Applications may also be printed from the Salem Police Department website at www.townofsalem.org.
