Derry tops Salem to maintain postseason hopes

Derry kept its American Legion baseball playoff hopes alive with a doubleheader sweep of host Salem at Michele Park Thursday. Chase Spears threw a complete game four-hit shutout for a 6-0 first game win. He allowed four hits, fanned six and walked two in his seven-inning outing. Jamie Collins bashed out three hits for two RBIs and Chris Gerossie had two hits.

Derry scored seven times in the fifth inning for an 11-2 nightcap win. Gerossie highlighted that frame with a two-run double. Spears added three hits and two RBIs to that win and teammate Ben Curry had two hits. Winning pitcher Josh Yaratz allowed two hits in six innings. He fanned eight.

Sweeney Post 12, Jutras Post 3: Nolan Flynn collected three hits and teammates Connor Walsh, Peter Abood, Grant Corbitt and Cody Bassett each added two hits. Walsh and Abood each drove in three runs. Flynn, Corbitt and Bassett each had two RBIs for Sweeney (14-3) which hits the road Saturday for a first place showdown against host Lebanon at 1 p.m.

Winning Sweeney pitcher Kevin Gonzales allowed six hits and fanned six. Jutras (0-17) was led by Dylan Bissonnette and Sam Kasten, each getting two hits.
