Manchester man killed on I-293 apparently unconscious before crash

July 18. 2014 2:54PM

MANCHESTER — New Hampshire State Police Friday said a city man who died after his vehicle hit a guardrail on Interstate 203 was apparently unconscious when his vehicle entered the highway at about 9:15 a.m.

The man who died was identified as Edward Wells, 59, who was alone in the vehicle. State police said Wells was unresponsive when he was transported to Catholic Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Wells was driving a 2002 GMC Envoy that struck a guardrail in the northbound lane between Exits 6 and 7 and came to rest on its roof. Wells was not wearing a seatbelt.

State police said witnesses reported the Envoy was traveling west on Front Street when it veered across the road, traveled through an uphill grass median and struck a guardrail, which caused it to vault onto Interstate 293, coming to rest on its roof in the left lane.

Police said roadway evidence supports the initial conclusion about the crash and speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.

Troopers were assisted by Manchester police and fire departments and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation. Interstate 293 was limited to one lane for about an hour during the initial investigation.

The accident investigation is still active and anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Mark Suttmeier at New Hampshire State Police Troop B barracks, 666-3333.
