Police: Dog likely stolen from Candia home

Hummer has been missing since early Wednesday morning.

CANDIA — Police are exploring the questionable disappearance of a local dog, and they suspect a thief may be responsible.

Hummer, an 11-month-old tri-colored male Bernese Mountain Dog, was last seen Wednesday morning around 8 a.m. in his High Street yard, not far from the Hooksett town line.

Police suspect someone may have taken the dog due to his relatively high price tag, said Candia Animal Control Officer Kate Morrill, who noted the dog was imported from Hungary for breeding purposes.

“His yard has an electric fence and he was wearing a collar. He’s been there for six months and they’ve never had any issue with him getting out before,” she said. “What’s odd to us is that this is a pretty hearty dog, and there’s been no signs and no sightings of any kind, and we’ve had a lot of people out there looking. That makes us believe he may very well have been taken.”

Whether the dog was stolen or remains lost in the woods, Morrill said the owner is offering an undisclosed award for information leading to Hummer’s return.

“We’ve been searching everywhere and have posters all over town,” she said. “We’re just hoping someone out there can help us find him.”
