State bomb squad explodes suspicious package in Salem parking lot

SALEM — The state bomb squad was called in to dispose of a suspicious package in the Shaw’s parking lot on Cluff Crossing Road on Monday afternoon.

Police and bomb squad officers determined that the suspicious black bag with wires coming from it was not a bomb. According to Salem police officials, the bag contained wires, an old laptop, tightly wrapped towels, and other miscellaneous items.

The police and fire departments cleared the parking lot and area around 2:30 p.m. as they waited for the state bomb squad.

The bomb squad used a hydrojet water disruptor to explode the bag and the scene was declared safe by police and fire personnel around 3:30 p.m.

The police department is asking anyone who might have witnessed who left the bag in the parking lot to call them at 893-1911.
