Pandelena in second at New England Amateur golf

Nicholas Pandelena of Atkinson Country Club carded a four-under-par 67 round, good for second place after the first round of the 72-hole 85th New England Amateur Golf Championship at the Winchester (Mass.) Country Club Tuesday.

Pandelena, of Atkinson, was solid Tuesday, converting six birdies and 10 pars. He bogeyed two holes. On the front nine, Pandelena birdied the second hole and bogeyed the fifth hole. He made the turn even par before finishing hot with four birdies over the last five holes. He trails first-round leader John Gratton of Dedham, Mass., by one stroke.

In a seventh-place tie, three shots behind the leader, is Chris Houston of Laconia CC. He was one under on the front and back side, posting a two-under-par 69 round. One stroke behind Houston and in a tie for 17th place is newly crowned and two-time NHGA State Amateur champion Joe Leavitt of Atkinson CC. Birdies on holes two and seven allowed Leavitt to make the turn at two under. He bogeyed hole 10 and then parred out the rest of the way for a one-under 70 round.

Wednesday’s 18-hole round will determine who makes the cut as the field will be trimmed to the low 60 scorers and ties. Tim Manwaring of Bretwood of Keene and Max Linemayr of Wentworth-by-the-Sea of Rye are in good shape, both sitting on a one-over-par 72 round. Matt Paradis of Manchester’s Derryfield Country Club is in a good spot to make the cut, tied for 39th overall with a two-over-par 73 score.

Sitting on the fence right now is Connor Greenleaf of Windham CC with a four-over 75 score, tied for 63rd overall.

Looking to make the cut are Nick Fairweather of Passaconaway of Litchfield (five-over, 76), Jon Malloy of Laconia CC (five-over, 76), A.J. Correia of Laconia CC (six over, 77), Larry Nuttall of Green Meadow of Hudson (six over, 77), former State Am champ Danny Arvanitis of Derryfield CC (six over, 77), Makenzie Denver of Derryfield (six over, 77), Ryan Tombs of Manchester CC (seven over, 78), Matthew Killam of Newport (eight over, 79), former two-time State Am champ Craig Steckowych of Portsmouth (10 over, 81), Scott Killam of Newport (12 over, 83), and Justin Clutter of Manchester CC (14 over, 85).
