NH's Pandelena in the hunt at NE Amateur

Nick Pandelena of Atkinson Country Club, seen last week during the semifinals of the New Hampshire State Amateur, is bidding to win the New England Amateur, which enters its final round Thursday at Winchester, Mass. (DAVID LANE/UNION LEADER)

Nicholas Pandelena of Atkinson Country Club, who maintained sole possession of second place, two-time and current NHGA State Amateur champion Joe Leavitt of Atkinson and Makenzie Denver of Derryfield CC of Manchester made the cut after the second round of the 85th New England Amateur Golf Championship at the Winchester (Mass.) Country Club Wednesday.

The field was trimmed to the low 40 scores and ties and the tournament concludes today with 36 hole.

Pandelena (67-70-137) trails John Gratton of Dedham, Mass. (66-69-135) by two strokes.Despite a double bogey on hole six, Pandelena still made the turn at even par with birdies on holes five and eight. On Tuesday, the Atkinson resident carved out five birdies on the back side, including four over the last five holes.

Leavitt (70-74-144) faltered a bit Wednesday, dropping from a 17th place tie Tuesday to a three-way tie in 23rd place. Leavitt was five-over on the front side, bogeying holes one, seven and nine and posting a double bogey on hole six. He managed to finish three-over with birdies on holes 12 and 18.

Denver is a graduate of Manchester Memorial who will be entering his junior season as a member of the Skidmore College golf team in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Denver matched three other golfers Wednesday with the second best score of the day, a two-under 69 round. Denver (77-69-146, tied for 31st) started the day four-over. He blistered the front nine scoring four total birdies on holes three, five, six and seven before bogeying hole nine, making the turn at three-under. He parred out until making bogey on hole 18.
