Nashua native Nolan: So far, so good playing ball for Triple-A Buffalo

NASHUA native Kevin Nolan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to help Triple-A Buffalo defeat Lehigh Valley 9-7 Friday night.

Nolan has now played in two games with Buffalo since being called up from the New Hampshire Fisher Cats last week. In a 3-1 Buffalo win on Thursday Nolan went 1-for-3.

After playing in seven games with Buffalo back in April, Nolan has raised his Triple-A batting average to .269 with five runs and an RBI.

The shortstop who played at Nashua South has appeared in 82 games with the Fisher Cats this season, hitting .258 with five home runs, 35 RBIs and seven stolen bases.

SAM FULD has seen his hot July cool off a bit after the All-Star break.

Fuld, a Durham native and outfielder for the Minnesota Twins, is just 2-for-14 since the ASG on July 15.

Fuld's average is now .260 for the season, but climbed steadily in the month of July as he seemed to find his groove after coming back from a month out of action due to a concussion.

He began July batting just .214 but has hit a torrid .370 this month to raise his average, reaching a high of .269 after a 1-for-2 outing in a 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay a week ago.

A career .239 hitter over his six MLB seasons, Fuld hit .299 in 65 games with the Cubs in 2009 for his career best.

NORTH CONWAY'S Jeff Locke improved to 2-1 on the season with a strong outing a week ago. He was scheduled to start Saturday night against Colorado.

Locke scattered seven hits and three runs over six innings of work to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-3 win over Colorado.

The runs came early in the game via the long ball as Josh Rutledge and Mike McKenry homered in the first two frames. Locke has now run his streak to eight consecutive quality starts even though he has not been on the receiving end of many "Ws" due to leaving the game behind or tied thanks to inconsistent run support from his offense.

Pittsburgh has won seven of the past eight games that Locke has started.

FORMER Keene Swamp Bat Ben Paulsen made MLB debut Monday night with the Colorado Rockies. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in a 7-2 loss to Washington.

A Clemson product, Paulsen was a 2010 third round draft pick in 2010 and has spent most of this season in Triple-A with Colorado Springs, where he was an a PCL all-star while hitting .291 with 15 home runs.

Paulsen started in 18 games for the Swamp Bats in 2007, hitting .318 with two homers and 11 RBIs. He becomes the 23rd former Swamp Bats player to make the MLB ranks.

FRANKLIN'S Derrick Sylvester had a rough outing on Tuesday night, working two-thirds of a inning with the Arizona (Rookie) League Dodgers.

Sylvester, who played for Southern New Hampshire University, allowed a run and two hits in the brief outing. Thus far with the Dodgers, he is 0-2 with an ERA of 2.79 through 9 2/3 innings of work.

Sylvester went 9-2 with a 2.59 ERA in his senior season with the Penmen and was drafted by Los Angeles in the 31st round (939 overall) of this year's draft.
