Police are seeking answers after a lost Candia dog mysteriously returned home. (RYAN O'CONNOR/Union Leader Correspondent)

Rare dog returns home after missing for more than a week

CANDIA — Just over a week after his disappearance, Hummer, a rare 11-month-old tri-colored male Bernese Mountain Dog, has returned to his Candia home.

Police say they are still investigating if the dog was taken or found, and then brought back, or if it simply ran away and returned on its own.

.
Officer Kevin Mahoney was called to the dog owner’s High Street home July 24 around 7:30 a.m., after the owner called police to report that the dog had returned.

“The dog mysteriously appeared, walking up the driveway of the house,” said Mahoney. “The owner was kind of suspicious because the dog had been missing for a couple weeks and it didn’t appear malnourished, dirty, or wet. It definitely didn’t appear like it was out in the woods or anything like that.”
..
The owner had offered a $1,000 reward for the relatively expensive canine — which was imported from Hungary for breeding purposes — after it disappeared on July 16. The event was immediately deemed suspicious since the dog was wearing an electronic collar and had never attempted to leave the yard in the six months it had lived at the home.
..
Mahoney said he interviewed several neighbors and one man remembered seeing a newer-model small dark-colored SUV slowly drive down the road and pull into the driveway of the dog’s owner. The driver was described as a woman in her late 40s or early 50s with light gray hair and glasses, Mahoney said.
..
“Right now, we really don’t know the circumstances of how the dog disappeared and how it returned,” he said. “It could have ran away and maybe someone found it, cleaned it up, fed it and saw the article in the (New Hampshire Union Leader) or one of the signs around town and decided to drop it off in the driveway, so there wasn’t any fanfare or anything like that. Or it could have been stolen from the yard and the person realized it the dog would stand out, got spooked because of the $1,000 reward, and decided to return dog instead of trying to keep it or sell it.”
